Well, I think it's about that time again folks. The once-every-1/4-year post from yours truly. I've had some ideas bouncing around in my head about my blog lately so there will certainly be changes (not to mention more posts) coming.

For now, I wanted to share my summer through photos. I've recently become engrossed in Instagram, the iPhone app with the fun effects that acts like a second Twitter for photos. Twitter is like the know-it-all big sister to Instagram's dumb-but-pretty younger sis. That is to say it's fun, effortless and requires little thought. I've had this blog for kind of a long time now, and I have probably lost a lot of readers by never updating, or updating sporadically, or maybe by swearing, or not swearing, or not posting outfit photos or whatever. But in the process of losing blog-friends I think I've probably gained one or two so that's why I wanted to take a look back at my favourite posts of all time. Also because I'm feeling uninspired lately and I really like how my blog used to be; fun, dumb, and personal. Strap in guys...

6. Seth Rogen rocking out on a bicycle:

This was when Seth Rogen was kind of over saturated and people were either in the love-him or hate-him camp. It was also after he lost a bunch of weight and cut off his fro so I was naturally in the love-him camp because I love a good makeover story.

5. The time I ate an apple on webcam and took screenshots, aka, See-Food:

I don't know why I like this. It just always makes me laugh and want an apple. I promise it's not for vain reasons...I think.

4. Crabby Hat:

This is one of my favourite pictures ever found on the internet because it's absolutely wacky and so old. How did this lady get away with wearing this when film was still in black and white? My best guess is that she was an ambassador on the east coast for some sort of shellfish fetival and she was just trying to get into the spirit. Or she's Lady Gaga's grandma.

I posted this in 2008 and I still think about Bologna Baby on the regz. I don't know who made her or photographed her or what she was intended or if anyone else even found her as fascinating and hilarious as I did. Does anybody like Bologna Baby like I do? Either way, she is probably the mascot of this blog in my mind. There was also a follow-up post where I found a few more processed-food babies in equally inexplicable photos. I don't know.

Sucker Punch You In the Junk

Yes, it's disappointing that the much-anticipated (um...by me at least?) movie Sucker Punch has been repeatedly reviewed as the worst movie of the year. But can we all agree that it was the best movie PREMIERE of the year? With a cast full of really cool women who are all about taking risks with their fashion choices (see: Jena Malone, Emily Browning) this premiere was bound to be a feast for the eyes:

Do you think all the girls coordinated their outfits via text/skype before going? Not that I've ever... done that... but seriously, they had to have talked about it sometime because what we see here is a group of cool girls wearing totally complementary colours and looking amazing in a group photo. Canary yellow, floral, baby blue brocade (!!!) and a really great 90's separates outfit featuring a b-top! Much obliged, ladies.

I've always been a Liv Tyler fan, haven't you? She's just so freaking pretty and seems so sweet and and and her dad is Steven Tyler! What's cooler than that? Did you know she didn't know who her father was until her mother (the beautiful mother Bebe Buell) took her to an Aerosmith concert and she met Steven Tyler. Apparently she was like "Dude! I look a lot like that guy, but in a girl body? This is weird Mom..." and her mom fessed up. I made up that quote but you get the idea.

What was I saying? OH Liv Tyler! Beyond the fact that she's gorgeous, she also has pretty awesome style. One of my favourite episodes of Rachel Zoe Project was when Rachel brought racks and racks of clothes to Liv's place and they just had a little try-on sesh. It was cool because instead of gowns it was all these really chic casual clothes and it gave you an insight into the other side of styling (usually RZ Proj is all about formal events which can get boring). I always think of Rachel Zoe now when I see Liv Tyler wearing some killer outfits but I want to make sure credit goes to both parties because I think Liv also has great personal style. I am obsessed with this letterman jacket and black leather skirt combo. Only a perfect human woman can wear a jacket draped over her shoulders and not look like a dank...Observe:

Eggs and Spinach in Tomato Sauce

I first made Eggs in Tomato Sauce from Smitten Kitchen a year ago and was hooked. It's the perfect way to use up leftover tomato sauce or canned tomatoes and it's such a flavourful and easy breakfast/brunch. For this version, I used spinach in the sauce and crumbled goat cheese on top. It was definitely my favourite incarnation of the recipe.

Here's some informal instructions on how to make your own version:

1. Warm the tomato sauce (I used leftover sauce from a pizza I made last night, plus some leftover canned tomatoes) in a non-stick frying pan and add some fresh spinach leaves. Cover so the spinach wilts.

2. Crack the eggs and add them to the pan one by one so you can space them evenly on the surface of the sauce. Season with S+P and cover so the whites cook.

3. When the whites are cooked and the yolks are still soft (or however your prefer your eggs) remove from the pan and crumble goat cheese or feta on top. Serve with a piece of toast!

It sounds kind of weird (Stu was skeptical when I first made this for him) but it is absolutely delicious and so satisfying.

ASOS vs. Acne Resort 2011

So lets talk "knock-offs" for a second...
I'm not very well versed in the arguments for or (most prominently) against knock-offs. I don't really know why anyone cares that people can buy/carry ugly fake Louis Vuitton bags. The people who buy fakes could never afford the real thing (I'm counted in with these types, but I have never had any interest in buying a knock-off bag) so they aren't part of the target market of these companies anyway. I think one of the arguments is that counterfeiters are making a lot of money from the artistic property of whomever designed the (hideous...) bags so I guess that's wrong.

ANYWAY BACK ON TOPIC: the thing I wanted to point out is that, as far as I can tell, Acne isn't selling this hat anyway and it was probably just a one-off piece used to compliment or draw attention to the collection. If anyone has any background on the matter, please fill me in. If not, enjoy this ASOS hat because it's pretty spiffy, if wholly unrealistic...

Song of the day I guess?

4 months ago, this song was on repeat on my iPod for four days straight. It's the ideal song for walking aimlessly through parks while killing time waiting for somebody. I speak from experience, people! The claymation video is also a great compliment to the dreamy nature of Grizzly Bear instrumentals.

ASOS Blouse

My ASOS blouse (here)finally came on Friday! It buttons really weirdly and dips really low in front so I decided to sport it as a cardigan yesterday. My friend Natahsha, a photographer, was kind enough to snap a picture of it for the blog.

I'm also wearing shorts and tights by Joe Fresh, and my BCBGeneration bag.

I think this solidifies my feeling that ombre hair is kind of over...at least for me. My ends just look kind of dry and lifeless. Time for a chocolate brown dye-job stat. I usually hate the way I look in photos but Natahsha was able to snap a shot I actually like! I think it's a testament to her talent...

The Hat Chronicles

Yesterday, Sunday, Stu and I went downtown to shop. He needed to get a bag for the gym/school/multipurpose and I love to help so I tagged along. Soon enough, after devouring our falafel plates on Robson, I became an unwilling participant in the epic hat search of 2011. I was looking for a soft, pretty knit hat at the Bay but Stu insisted I try on every hat he picked out and that I needed "photographic evidence" of my journey. This is what ensued:

Does anybody out there also have a boyfriend who loves to embarrass you? Besides this adventure(my personal favourite was the disgusting blue bow hat), he has changed my facebook status to "I like poo" and logged on to my account so that he could sign me up for the Nickelback fanclub. Holy Crap: Dry Shampoo That Will Change Your Life

Usually a product won't work so well that it compels me to immediately open up my laptop to gush about it, but today that happened. If you know me, you might know how much I dislike washing my hair. It's not that I'm disgusting or I like the greasy look, it's just that I hate having to always re-style my hair and decide where I'm going to part it and whether or not I will blow-dry it and...it's exhausting.

Enter: dry shampoo. I started using dry shampoo two years ago when it first came out in Canada. My first purchase was Ojon Rub-Out dry cleanser from Sephora. I really liked it but when I went back to buy another bottle it had been discontinued. Apparently it had to be re-formulated or something (it's back now), so I opted instead for Oscar Blandi Pronto Dry Shampoo Spray also from Sephora. It was ok but I found that I had to use a lot of it and the small bottle I bought was gone in less than a month. That was the end of my dry shampoo story for a while because the Ojon and Oscar Blandi were so expensive. Then came Tresemme Freshstart Dry Shampoo. I was so impressed with how cheap it was (about $7 and available everywhere) that I immediately bought it. The problem with the Tresemme was that it was smelly (think chemicals) and cakey. When I used it, my hair would be gross and grimy by the end of the day. It also left my hair really matte as if I'd used loads of hairspray.

Now, my friends, I think my dry shampoo search has come to an end with my recent purchase of Batiste Dry Shampoo (pictured above).

Pros:

It sprays on really easily
It makes a loud "shhhh" sound (not sure why that's a "pro" but I found it really satisfying?)
It goes on dry (unlike Tresemme)
Smells really good
My 2-day-old hair looks totally clean and SHINY and I can usually NEVER go two days without washing it
It honestly looks like I washed my hair this morning
Only costs ~$8

Cons:

Ummmm...
Not a big deal but it goes on a little white-ish. I was alarmed at first but all it took was a little brushing (see below) to get my hair back to its shiny, light brown colour.

So there you have it, my new favourite! Just make sure to follow the directions on the bottle; It says to spray it from 30cm away, massage in with your fingers and brush out with a natural-bristle brush. I think that last part is key because it avoids the piecey look you might get if you used a plastic brush/comb.

EDIT: I bought it at this weird store in BC called Army and Navy but I've seen it available at drugstores like London Drugs and Shoppers Drug Mart (Canadian stores!)

There was one I was contemplating but then I watched a model wear it down the ASOS runway (they have a nifty little feature for each garment where you can see it in action!) and she was slouching so badly that I was turned off for life.

Leelee lady of the 90's

Remember when Leelee Sobieski was in The Glass House and everyone thought she looked like a younger Helen Hunt and all that stuff? Well, here's something completely different:

She's actually kind of always been an under-the-radar fashion plate, like when she was Aldys in Never Been Kissed:

I am sitting here trying to figure out where I would get a headband like that, seriously. And the glasses chains?

recipe: Potato Pancakes with Paprika-Dill Cream

I made these potato pancakes for brunch this morning and was so impressed. I couldn't believe it only took me 20 mins start-to-finish! I usually make them with regular yellow onion but the green onion added such a nice freshness and this paprika-dill cream I dreamed up turned out really well. This is pretty enough to serve for a fancy brunch (you could make smaller-sized pancakes), but I just made it for myself.

Potato Pancakes with Paprika-Dill Cream

Makes four medium sized pancakes, serves 2 (or 1 if you’re hungry)

Ingredients:
1 large Russet potato
1 stalk of green onions, chopped
2 large eggs
¼ cup of pancake mix (I used gluten-free)
Salt and pepper to taste
Generous amount of olive or vegetable oil

3 tablespoons of plain yogurt (sour cream works too)
3 tablespoons of mayonnaise (I used ½ fat mayo)
½ tsp of paprika
1 tsp dried dill (I would use fresh chopped dill if on hand)

Directions:
In a mixing bowl, crack the eggs and whisk them lightly. Peel the potato and shred it. Work quickly because it tends to go brown! Once shredded, squeeze the water out of the potato using cheesecloth or layered paper towel. Add the potato, green onion, pancake mix, and salt & pepper to the eggs and mix well. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, use a measuring cup (I used ¼ cup) to scoop out pancakes and place them in the pan. Cook on each side until golden brown (about 5-6 mins).

Sauce: Mix yogurt, mayonnaise, paprika, dill and salt and pepper to taste.

Serve pancakes with a dollop of cream and garnish with your favourite fresh herb.

Tell me if you make it and how it turns out! Potato pancakes are the single best way to consume potatoes in my opinion!

The title "hairy" kind of makes me think of pubes? Ok sorry to gross everybody out before I post pictures of my HAIR on my HEAD. Here goes...

hairy part 1

For the past week or so, I've been consumed with thoughts of a new hairstyle. When I have these ideas, you know, ideas that are actually do-able and not something like "HEY, DYE YOUR HAIR PINK, YOU'RE ONLY YOUNG ONCE", they become all I can think of. I decided to book a hair appointment upon finding the perfect cut-inspiration: Ashley Olsen's bob.

So today I went in for my appointment (to the lovely Rubi at Hennessey Salon+Spa, Oakridge) with this collage in hand:

Yeah, saying I went a little overboard is an understatement...I literally scoured google images and getty images for every appearance she ever made with that hair. You know, so I could see how she styled it/how it...moved?

Anyway, spoiler alert, it turned out really nice. I'm super pleased with the results, and plan on posting pictures tomorrow! SEE, being totally obsessive and overbearing with your hair stylist pays off!

I'm absolutely obsessed with this editorial I saw on the Stylish Wanderer (originally from Vogue Germany) last month. I have really never seen anything like it. I think that the 1970's is "my decade" in that I think if I could choose any decade to be alive in, it would have been that one.

Things I love about this:

The hair: it's so glossy that it almost looks like straw. I think shaped, directional hair is coming back and I may or may not be craving a bob...
The heavily saturated colours. Makes me want to buy a juicer?

Happy Halloween everyone! The other day, in anticipation for this awesome holiday, Stu and I decorated the outside of his house for the trick-or-treaters! I came over in my best fall clothes: my favourite cape, my brown lace up booties and my denim shirt (buttoned all the way up of course). We put up fake spiderwebs, skull garland and a cute green skeleton. Tonight we're having pizza and beer and watching the Shining, which I have NEVER seen (don't make fun of me guys). I love Halloween, what did everyone dress up as?

Stu is my favourite: upon opening the first package of spider webs, he went over to the bushes and placed it like this. I had to instruct him in the art of actually spreading out the cotton so it looks somewhat like a real spiderweb, he didn't know.

These are some images from a shoot I styled a while ago. This shoot was a crazy experience; the "sand dunes" you see are actually huge hills of sand on a construction site (which apparently has public access). I was unfortunately SO windy and SO hot that day so the makeup artist was a wreck. I was also a wreck about the clothes getting ruined but they were luckily fine! I couldn't get into the shower soon enough after this shoot, it wasn't nice sand that you find at the beach, it was really dusty, fine sand that caked on my feet and clothes and hair.

Tonight, Stu and I went for drinks at Drink, a cute little cocktail lounge in New Westminster. We went out to celebrate him finishing midterms for the year! He's in third year microbiology so he has to work HARD, I don't envy him but I do admire his drive.

We suited up in our most wind-proof gear and walked over to Drink for margarita's (me) and dark beer (him).

I wore my new (to me, second hand) pink suede bomber. I bought it in hopes of getting it dry-cleaned but to my chagrin, no dry cleaner would take it! They said
- if they tried to clean it, the pink would fade
- the chemicals would melt the suede
- they could send it away for cleaning but it would cost $70-$80!
Considering that is 4 times what I paid for this sucker, I declined. It isn't terribly stained or gross, the colour is just a little bit dull from wear. It still works though, Stu even called it "badass" so, there you have it.

While browsing Proenza Schouler Fall 2010 on style.com for Buying class, I had a lovely revelation that this will be my fall look. I browsed the collection when it came out in February but, as the cycle of fashion/collections goes, I was still looking forward to Summer clothes. Now that Summer is...ahem... coming to and end (sorryyyyyy) I can look forward to cute, heavier clothes like these! I will so miss my cutoff jean shorts though.

I don't think I would ever buy anything if I went to Opening Ceremony because I get overwhelmed when every piece of clothing or pair of shoes in one place is WONDERFUL. I think I would just generally feel poor and out of place among the gorgeous stuff. That being said, I would totally order these loafers and this Boy by Band of Outsiders skirt online, where things are simpler and require less browsing and therefore less feeling bad. Does anyone want to send me a pre-paid credit card?

Unfortunately I missed the live online broadcast of this show because I was partaking in Olympic festivities around Vancouver at the time, but how cool is it that designers are now doing live feeds? I remember when McQueen did it a few seasons ago for the first time; it was awesome.

MY CHRISTMAS LIST OF 09: THE BUY ME STUFF EDITION

OYOYOYOYYOOYOYOY! OY it's Christmas in two days! Stu has left for his homeland (6 hours away by gross Greyhound) so I already gave him his gifts and he loved them! Less stress! The only thing left to do is bake gingerbread cookies (from Betty Crocker mix HOLLERRRRRRR) and watch The Holiday (so good). I miss my Winnipeg friends like crazy and it doesn't help to see pictures of all the holiday parties they are attending ever so fabulously. TO HELP, I made a Christmas list! Remember these shoes? Well if you do the math, it has been over a year since I've had them and I've worn them a LOT. I've worn them so much that they were scuffed up and starting to look ratty and I was starting to not want to wear them anymore. Also they're slightly too big so I have to wear them with thick grandpa socks (which is ok on cold days!). So I decided to take matters into my own hands and PAINT THEMMMMMM!

I started off with the plan to mix up a grey that matched and just retouch them a little bit but when I ran out of black acrylic paint I had to think on my feet (PUNNNNN). The grey was definitely not dark enough yet so I decided to just run with it! I painted the front part and then the back heel part using the stitching as my guide. Then I got into detailing and did the trim! It was hella fun. TAKE A LOOK:

So cute right? I plan on painting them different colours when this colour scuffs and to just keep painting them until they fall apart because I love these shoes!

As much as I tried not to resort to ugly yellow-border watermarked Just Jared photos, I had to because they were the biggest and best available to showcase the wonderment that was BLAIR MEESTER AT THE LOUIS VUITTON SPRING 2010 SHOW IN PARIS, FRANCE, EUROPE, WORLD, UNIVERSE.

One time a really drunk girl in a dive bathroom told me I look like Leighton Meester and all at once I was like OMG THANK YOU and OMG I DON'T THOUGH. I just love how she found non-designer shoes that she loved and had them re-heeled to make them wearable for every day. It's fun to DIY sometimes but if you don't have the skill-level for something like a drastic alteration, tailoring or shoe modification, don't let it hold you down; you can always get it done somewhere close by, usually for cheaper than you'd think. When my favourite pair of Payless lace-up oxfords lost one of the pieces on its heel, I took them into a shoe-repair shop and had them fixed (the noisy plastic heel-caps replaced with new, better, rubber heel-caps) within a day and for only 6 dollars! I was amazed at how cheap it was and so far my heels have held up swimmingly. It's also nice to frequent local family-owned businesses like seamstresses, tailors and shoe-repair shops because in this economy, they HAVE to do quality work and bring in clients to stay afloat so you know you're getting the best service that can be offered.

Now to find some gold disco shoes at Value Village...

I really enjoy blogs that recap shows that I DO NOT WATCH. I don't know what it is, maybe it's because TV is absolutely ridonk these days or maybe it's because the people who do epic recaps make me pee my pants with their comments but I THINK IT'S A BIT OF BOTH. Plus I love visual stimuli and obv recap posts come equipped with screen shots of the funniest looks given by cast members.

Some of my faves are:

Elizabeth's (White Lightning) recaps of Gossip Girl. YEAH I DON'T WATCH GOSSIP GIRL. Oh what's that? You thought I did because I can totally carry on conversations about Chuck and Blair and Jenny and that lil boy and I always know what ugly outfit/hairstyle/expression/EVERYTHING Serena had this week? It's all because of this girl who not only makes me pee with every recap but also with every BLOG ENTRY. Also she thinks I'm pretty so I was basically forced to feature her in this post. KITTING!

Andrew's (Pull Teeth aka my best friend aka my brother/sister) recaps of the City. Ok I admit I do watch this show although not as consistently as Andrew, which is one of the reasons why I rely on his recaps. Another reason: his fascination and love for NEVAN!!!! who is also my favourite.

and lastly, Tracie Egan, Jezebel writer and lover of Judge Judy, Bad Girls Club, The View and child-pageant reality television. I like her because she has the weirdest taste in television and can always fill me in on Judge Judy and the View since I can't ever watch them because I have SCHOOL.

Some might say that they dig your simplicity in classic white but I'm going to run with the fact that Nancy's decor is inviting and warm. Nancy: 2, Jackie: 0

This is a tough one, although it doesn't matter because Nancy just took 2 out of 3 anyway. While I love Nancy's use of pastels (the pink accents remind me of Marie Antoinette) I have to hand it to Jackie. Her red chairs and golden chandelier take the cake.

Apparently airports across the country (including Vancouver Airport) are backed up and cancelling/delaying tons of domestic flights which means that lots of people won't be home for Christmas. That totally sucks. I really hope it clears up before the 27th when I'm scheduled to fly to Winnipeg for two weeks.
